Each new generation of DDR can transmit more data than the generation before it.

Can you combine different IBM modules together?

SDRAM is not compatible with DDR SDRAM, despite their similarities. Moreover, different generations of DDR SDRAM are not compatible with each other. Only DDR1 modules can be combined together.
