You may have noticed that many newer models of laptop feature an SSD rather than an HDD, but what exactly does that mean? Knowing about the storage capabilities of a new laptop is an important part of making a decision, so you can ensure that you are making the right choice.
What is SSD?
SSD stands for Solid State Drive, and you can use this instead of a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) in a computer or notebook.
- Function: An SSD does everything that an HDD does but it stores retainable data on memory chips even when there is no power. These memory chips are different to those in USB flash drives.
- Size: SSDs are smaller than HDDs, which gives manufacturers better flexibility when designing a laptop and the ability to add extra features due to the free space left. There are some laptop models that have both SSD and HDD together, which could be appealing to some people.
What are the Differences Between SSD and HDD?
While both do the same job such as storing your files and booting your operating system, they each have their own features. The differences between SSD and HDD are:
- Price: SSDs are more expensive than HDDs so laptops with this feature tend to be at a higher price point.
- Capacity: Due to pricing concerns, many laptops feature a 128 GB SSD or 256 GB SSD, usually going no higher than 500 GB in the high price range. While an SSD storage size is often less than that of an HDD, you can use an external hard drive for extra storage space. It is also possible to upgrade your SSD from 128 GB to 256 GB, or 256 GB to 512 GB if you choose to do so.
- Speed: An SSD will outdo a regular hard drive every time as a PC or laptop with SSD will boot up in less than a minute, plus will run Windows, apps and software faster, and also transfer files faster.
- Durability: An SSD is more likely to keep your files safe as it has no moving parts that could suffer damage if you shake your laptop around too much.
Does Toshiba Use SSD?
Toshiba is a major manufacturer of drives and have developed the Q Series SSDs that feature in their laptops. You can find Q Series and Q Series Pro SSDs in 128 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB capacity in a number of this brand's laptops.
