What to Consider When Looking for Home Audio Compact Shelf Stereos with CD Changers

As the name implies, compact shelf stereo systems are Hi-Fi audio players that are small in size and can literally fit on a bookshelf. These mini audio systems are popular among people with limited living space and those looking for a smaller system.

What Features Should I Consider In A Shelf Stereo System?

Even though Sony compact shelf stereos have been around for a long time, the mini stereo format has kept up with the developments in the music player industry and has a lot of contemporary features such as Bluetooth and high-resolution audio play.

  • Speaker power output: The higher the wattage of the speakers, the louder the music will sound. To calculate the total power output of a micro stereo system, multiply the speaker wattage by 2 (since there are two speakers). For example, if each speaker is 280 W, the total power output would be 560 W.
  • Remote control: A remote control will allow you to control your Hi-Fi stereo system without interrupting other tasks. You can turn on and off the system, switch between playable media modes, and change the CD or radio station preset.
  • Connectivity: Most units have a 3.5 mm audio jack that can be used with headphones. Others may come with Bluetooth, which allows you to play your music on wireless speakers or headphones. Bluetooth offers you the flexibility to move your wireless speakers around your home or yard. A USB connection may be used to connect a digital music player.
  • Extra/enhanced bass: Some micro systems come with built-in extra bass, which can enhance the sound quality of your music. Others can feature a stand-alone subwoofer.

What Type Of Media Can I Play On A Micro Shelf Audio System?

All-in-one shelf stereo systems can play music from some or all of the following music sources.

  • CD - some Sony systems come with a multiple disc CD player, which means that you can load multiple CDs and play music from any of them as you please. Various models can hold up to 50 CDs. Some CD players can also play CD-R/RW formats.
  • Cassette - stereos that play cassettes usually have a dual cassette deck.
  • FM/AM radio - most units will come with the option to preset radio stations. For example, the tuner can handle up to 20 FM presets.
  • Digital music player - some units may feature a USB connector that allows you to connect and play music directly from a digital music player. If your system has Bluetooth, you can also pair your device that way.
