A Checklist for Buying Orion 10-inch Subwoofers

You can expand the capacity of your car audio system by adding a sub. Understand what subs do and how to configure them in your vehicle to ensure you buy the right components for your car's stereo system.

What is a subwoofer?

A subwoofer is a type of audio speaker that is designed to reproduce a specific frequency of low-pitched sounds. These sounds range from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz and reproduce at bass and sub-bass levels. They're used in a variety of consumer audio equipment including home theater systems and car stereo systems.

Are there different types of subwoofers?

There are three main categories of car subwoofers.

  • Driver - The driver is simply referred to as the woofer. To operate it correctly, you'll need to put it inside of a subwoofer enclosure and connect it to an external amplifier as a power source.
  • Powered - Powered subs include an amplifier already in the enclosure. The design allows you to use less space in your vehicle than a traditional sub and amp configuration.
  • Vehicle-specific - Vehicle-specific subs are designed to fit compactly in different types of cars, SUVs, and trucks.
What are the features of car subwoofers?

There are many features that different types of subs include. Here are the main features you need to consider when selecting an Orion subwoofer for your car audio system.

  • Size - Subs range in size from 8 inches to 15 inches. Choose a size that works with your space requirement, vehicle dimensions, and mounting location.
  • Power - Look for the RMS watts in the product description. Be sure to match your amp to the sub power specifications.
  • Enclosure - The type of enclosure determines how sound is produced and delivered throughout your vehicle.
  • Impedance and sensitivity - Expressed in ohms, impedance measures output. The lower the ohm rating, the more output it produces at similar RMS wattage. Sensitivity, expressed in decibels, measures efficiency, or how loud sound will play.
  • Voice coils - There are single voice coil and dual voice coil subs. Dual coil subs have separate voice coils with dedicated connectors offering additional wiring capabilities.
How do you choose between different styles of Orion subs?

Consider how you want to set up and use your subs. If you're building a car audio system from scratch or replacing a sub, choose a 10-inch component to match with your existing speaker. For an out-of-the-box solution, choose an enclosed sub. A powered car subwoofer gives you a plug-and-play solution. If blending with your car's interior is important, choose a vehicle-specific sub, which can be either powered or paired with an amp.

Where can you mount an Orion subwoofer?

You can mount subs in the trunk or inside of the cabin under the seats. Mounting your sub in the trunk puts it closer to your rear speakers. Mounting under the car seats allows you to use shorter wires to connect the subs.
