Glass Bowls

Glass bowls are designed for serving food in an attractive way. These items allow you to display the food on the table before it is served. Glass bowls are also used for serving foods that are high in acid content and would etch away at a plastic bowl or a metal bowl.

What are the types of glass bowls?

  • Clear glass - Clear glass allows you to view everything that is in the bowl, making for a fun display for colorful fruit or dessert dishes.
  • Colored glass - Colored glass allows the light to shine through the glass and creates a decorative table setting. Opaque glass is also available in colors such as white, blue, and green.
  • Cereal bowl - A cereal bowl is short and wide. Cereal bowls can also be used for other foods.
  • Serving bowl - A serving bowl is often oblong or round in shape, shallow, and large in circumference.
  • Soup bowl - A glass soup bowl has tall sides to prevent sloshing.
  • Trifle bowl - A glass trifle bowl has a narrow base and wider top diameter to view desserts.
  • Mixing bowl - Glass mixing bowls have tall sides and can be used to mix by hand or with a KitchenAid or other brand of stand mixer.

What factors do you consider when choosing a glass bowl?

  • Choose a size - Small to extra-large glass bowls are available.
  • Choose a purpose - Consider what you want to do with the clear glass bowl, such as eat cereal or soup, serve desserts, mix cookie dough, or something else.
  • Choose a washing method - Consider whether your glass bowl will go in the dishwasher or microwave or if you want to hand wash it.
  • Choose a color - Clear, white, blue, green, and other colors of glass are available.
  • Choose a design - Glass bowls are available in solid colors, floral, geometric, and other designs.

How do you wash a glass bowl?

Glass can typically be washed by hand or in the dishwasher. To check if your cereal bowl or other glass bowl is dishwasher safe, turn it over and look at the markings on the bottom. A soup or cereal bowl made from glass is small enough to fit into either the top or bottom rack of a dishwasher.

If the glass cereal bowl has an intricate design, you may prefer to hand wash the item.

  • Begin by putting a dish cloth into the bottom of the sink basin to cushion the item from impact.
  • Use a gentle detergent and a soft, microfiber cloth.
  • If there is food stuck on the glass, soak the item with warm, soapy water. Abrasive sponges should not be used on glass bowls because the item's surface may scratch.
  • After removing food from the item, rinse it with cold water.
  • To hand dry the glass bowl, use a clean microfiber cloth, and wipe the item in a circular motion.
