How Home Theater Sound Works

Home theater is more than just a bigger screen. It's about recreating the experience of going to the movies in your own home and a big part of that is the speaker system.

What is a Home Theater Setup Like?

Surround audio is based around the idea that the audience gets a more immersive experience when the sound comes from all around them, rather than just the screen. In most cases, you want a receiver to manage all your inputs and speaker setup. There are several things to consider when picking the right setup for your own situation:

  • Number of Speakers: Most speaker systems label themselves by odd number, such as five, followed by point one, as in 5.1 speakers, which have five standard speakers in addition to the subwoofer. The reason for the odd number is to account for the center speaker, which carries most of the dialogue.
  • Locations: A 3.1-speaker system features two stereo drivers, one on each side of the center. Moving to 5.1 adds rear satellite speakers to help improve immersion. With a 7.1 setup, you have an additional pair mounting with one on each side, adding to the experience.
  • Subwoofer: The subwoofer sits after the decimal point. There's only one because low frequencies are omnidirectional, so you don't need to place subs to generate stereo separation because your ears can't hear it.

How Do You Lay Out the Speakers?

The actual installation depends on your intended home theatre system. In many cases it's a good idea to build your entire setup around a single brand as the speakers tend to be tonally matched. In the case of Bose, you'll probably use an Acoustimass module, which connects to the receiver and then run your satellites from that. Note that you will probably want a different setup in a larger room than a smaller one, but the same rules hold true for all size rooms:

  • Front Speakers: You want the center channel speaker facing straight out from the TV, either above or below the screen. Mount the left and right off to the sides, but angle them in toward your seating area just enough to focus on you. Moving them closer to the wall provides enhanced low frequency effects, but moving them away gives you cleaner overall sound.
  • Rear Speakers: In a 5.1 configuration you want the rears a foot or two above your head and off to the side rather than straight behind. You can move the rears further back when you have a 7.1 configuration.
  • Subwoofer: Put the bass module wherever you feel you need it. The Acoustimass can hit the low notes from anywhere in the room.

Audio Alternatives

A soundbar can give you great sound but if you're willing to run cable you can probably do better with a Bose 5.1-channel system due to the better separation. There's no reason to synthesize surround effects when you can generate the real thing from a set of cube speakers.
