Acura MDX Auto Glass

The Acura MDX debuted in 2001 with a goal to conquer the luxury crossover utility vehicle market. The SUV seats seven passengers and has a full list of high-end features. If you need to replace your Acura MDX auto glass, there are a few different options available that you might want to consider.

What is the difference between laminated and tempered glass?

All Acura MDX auto glass is considered safety glass, but there are two different ways of manufacturing safety glass. Most door glass, sunroof glass, and back glass is made from tempered glass. This is made by heating the glass to over 1000 degrees Fahrenheit and then cooling it quickly. If it does break, it will break into tiny pieces that will help limit injury in a crash. Most windshields and some side and rear glass parts are made through a lamination process. In this process, two pieces of glass sandwich a vinyl layer in the middle. The vinyl helps protect the passengers of the Acura SUV from foreign objects that may make their way into the vehicle in a crash. The vinyl also prevents broken glass from falling on those inside the MDX.

Does the MDX have sensors in the auto glass?

The Acura MDX has an option available called a rain sensor feature. The sensor is located in the windshield and automatically turns on the windshield wipers when it detects moisture. It works by measuring the amount of light that is reflected back to the sensor. If the glass is wet, less light finds its way to the sensor. If your vehicles windshield wipers automatically turn on when it rains, you will need to make sure that the replacement glass has the proper sensors for this feature to work. Acura did not include rain sensors for the MDX model years 2007 through 2013. In addition, an acoustic interlayer is available for the windshield. This provides an extra soundproofing layer for the interior of the vehicle and the comfort of the passengers. The soundproofing layer was only available for the model years 2005, 2006, and 2015. You have the option of getting replacement glass with or without these features if your vehicle was originally equipped with this technology package.

When do you need to replace Acura auto glass?

Many minor chips can be repaired using a filler kit, but the question is when the glass on your Acura model can be repaired or when it needs to be replaced completely. There are a few guidelines for determining when your Acura MDX needs new glass. The first thing to do is to examine the damage and determine if the membrane is punctured. If the membrane is punctured, eventually water will seep in and the glass will delaminate. Long cracks cannot be filled and will require a complete replacement. Any damage that impairs the sight of the driver will also require a complete replacement. Spider cracks on the windshield of your MDX require replacement as well because they eventually grow bigger. In the long run, many times, it is more economical to replace your SUVs glass rather than to try to fill it because small problems can turn into bigger ones.
