Choosing In-Wall and In-Ceiling Speaker Systems

You may with cool sounds beaming from every corner and not even see the systems. This is thanks to a well-concealed speaker system. In-wall and in-ceiling audio systems offer you room-filling sounds in an exceptionally decluttered environment.

Creating the right set-up means going through some considerations before purchase based on your needs and other aspects.

What do I need to know about speakers?

Here are some of the few terms that you will find flying around much of the time.

  • Surround sound - From this format, you can experience music from multiple directions. You will need a multi-channel speaker system for it to work effectively.
  • Speaker channels - At the basic level, a channel describes the number of speakers than a receiver can support. Therefore two channel system supports a pair of speakers. When you include a subwoofer to the equation, it becomes a 2.1-channel system. A home theater that offers surround sound uses the 5.1-channel speaker system or higher.
  • Bass - Low-toned sounds that play from the speaker. A specialized unit offers exceptional sound quality.
  • Woofer - A loudspeaker designed to produce the low-frequency sounds.
  • Subwoofer - It is similar to a woofer and serves the same purpose. The only difference is the frequency range, which is about 20 to 200 MHz while its counterpart serves the 20 to 2000 MHz incidence.
  • Tweeter - It is a speaker driver designed to produce sounds within a high-frequency range. Just as the name suggests, it is responsible for the tweeting sound effects.
  • Mid-range speaker - It handles all the frequencies that fall between the subwoofer and the tweeter.
  • Crossover - It is a device that splits up the input from an audio receiver into separate bands of frequencies.
  • Driver - It is the component that is responsible for producing sound in a speaker. The driver dictates whether the audio output is high-frequency, mid-range, or bass.

How will I choose the right speaker?

  • Consider the kind of set up that you want. You may choose stereo speakers to put up a casual system. To put up a quality surround system, you will need a 5.1 channel speaker system.
  • Check the size and style of your room. A cramped up space will distort the quality of the sound, especially if it comes from the walls. You might need a bigger set up in large areas. A down-firing speaker system can help you achieve surround quality in such situations.
  • Speakers should give some level of resistance to the electrical input from the amplifier. The measure for this attribute is called impedance. An ohm rating gives the measure of the resistance. You should always match the requirements so that you do not wear out the amplifier. The exception is when you get a home theater that uses a built-in amplifier.
